Microcement Fireplace & TV Wall in a Toronto Condo

This microcement fireplace Toronto case study begins in a two-storey condo with a concrete accent wall that gave the interior a calm, architectural character. The owners wanted their three-sided fireplace and TV wall to feel like part of that same design language—not a separate surround added after the fact.

We created a hand-trowelled microcement fireplace and TV wall in a concrete-effect, or béton optik, finish. The colour was developed to sit alongside the existing accent wall, matching its undertone and overall depth while allowing the new surface to retain its own subtle hand-finished movement.

The Brief: One Architectural Story Across Two Levels

A three-sided fireplace makes a strong visual statement in a condo because it is seen from more than one approach. Here, the goal was not simply a grey fireplace wall. It was to make the feature read as one considered volume: front face, side returns and TV area working together with the concrete wall already in the space.

Matching the colour direction was essential. A concrete-effect finish can easily look too blue, too warm or too flat beside real concrete. We worked toward a balanced mineral grey that complemented the existing wall instead of competing with it.

Before, During & After: The Fireplace TV Wall

From the built-in framing and surface preparation through the hand-applied microcement layers, this gallery follows the fireplace wall into its finished colour-matched béton optik surface.

Why Microcement Was the Right Finish

Microcement is a hand-applied decorative finish that creates a continuous surface rather than a grid of tiles, panels or joints. That visual continuity was important for this fireplace TV wall: it allowed the feature to feel tailored to the architecture of the condo.

The application develops fine trowel movement and restrained tonal variation. From a distance the wall reads as a calm, monolithic concrete surface; up close, it has the depth and texture that make a handcrafted finish feel more luxurious than a printed or painted imitation.

Concrete Effect, Not Generic Grey

Concrete effect is one design expression of microcement, not a separate material. By adjusting colour, trowel work and final sheen, the finish can be quieter and more refined or visibly layered and expressive.

For this condo, the goal was a soft béton optik effect: organic enough to relate to the existing concrete wall, but controlled enough to work with the clean lines of a contemporary fireplace and television. The result adds depth without making the room feel cold or industrial.

Planning a Fireplace TV Wall in a Condo

Every fireplace surround and media wall needs its own surface assessment and design plan. We review the geometry of the wall, the existing finishes around it, the intended colour palette and the technical requirements of the fireplace installation before recommending the appropriate finish system.

  • Colour relationship: we compare the target finish against adjacent walls, floors, millwork and natural light.
  • Visual continuity: front faces, corners, returns and TV zones are planned as one composition.
  • Surface preparation: the final result depends on a stable, properly prepared substrate before the decorative layers begin.
  • Final character: we decide whether the finish should be soft and minimal or more visibly concrete-like before the application starts.

For a fireplace area, we also coordinate the decorative scope around the fireplace manufacturer’s installation requirements and existing clearances.

The Result: A Cohesive, Custom Condo Focal Point

The completed microcement fireplace and TV wall now connects visually to the concrete accent wall behind it while keeping its own handcrafted depth. It turns the open living area into a more cohesive, design-led space and shows how a targeted decorative finish can change the feeling of a condo without changing its layout.
